Dr. Rothstein, who lives and practices nearby since 1976 decided to share in the happiness, and documented for posterity the anticipation and joy at the wedding of Barbara Pilgremto Geraldine Whitsett, and Maira to Marie Garcia.

Not on the set more than 10 minutes, he hied himself to the front of the line and there set eyes upon Barbara and Geraldine accompanied by their witness and dearest confidant Barbara. They took his heart in an instant as they professed the love they had for one another. Nothing unusual except for the fact that one of them was 81 and the other 76, and partners for 48 years. Moreover, they had been first on the line since 5 am that morning.

Their story would have ended woefully at the clerk’s desk when Barbara admitted she had forgotten identification. The kind clerk, beside herself, and supporting staff were determined to let nothing mar their very first couples greatest day of joy and with citywide resources at their disposal produced the missing document to heartfelt applause of all those surrounding.

Supreme Court Judge Hon. Robin Garson married them — her first-ever same sex marriage–and with tears in her eyes, and gushing emotion put a blessing on their heads.

Maira and Marie Garcia were not the first in line, but to Dr. Rothstein they were beyond any doubt dressed to show how much this day meant to each other. Spellbound by their sartorial elegance, he could hardly contain his joy when they invited him to accompany them and their family to the courtroom of the Municipal building where they were married by an elated/ minister, proud to officiate at her first legal same-sex nuptial.

I think any cautious law enforcement official should be in a state of alert. There is no such think as under-estimating the border situation.”

Meanwhile, about 50 miles away in Laredo, Texas (USA) at a 2011 Webb County Sheriff’s Press Conference, Sheriff Martin Cuellar said he has taken preventive measures by placing security cameras along the river banks and within two months will have a helicopter to patrol the Laredo, Texas and Nuevo Laredo, Tamaulipas, Mexico border area. Sheriff Cuellar stated that he is also purchasing air boats in the near future for his deputies so they can patrol the Rio Grande River.

“It is these types of proactive measures that makes Laredo safe. When chief law enforcement official takes a hands-on approach to dealing with Mexico’s border crisis, you got the community more at ease. But it’s easy when you got the money. It’s not that easy for smaller communities like Zapata, Texas. ” Castaneda states. “Also, I’ve heard people say I’ve been to Mexico and nothing happened to me. But have you been to Nuevo, Laredo Tamaulipas? According to local media in Nuevo Laredo they currently they have no ‘police’. Tell the loved ones of those that are missing or that have been murdered that there is nothing to worry. I don’t think you’re going to get a nice response.”

Thousands of people have been killed in Mexico. According to government statistics, the numbers of those who were killed in execution style killings last year was over 30,000. In 2011, the numbers will be staggering. Is Mexico winning the war against the drug cartels?

“I don’t think Mexico will victorious anytime soon, “says Castaneda. “It’s about money. You get paid more in the drug cartel than a regular day-to-day job. Would you rather have fifty dollars a week or five hundred a week? Do the math. Mexico needs to take care of the economy, the drug war and their politics. None of it will come soon.”

FaceLube Best Skin Care For Men, Meineke Car Care Antioch and O?Reilly Auto Parts Antioch came together to support the Bay Point All-Stars Cheerleading Team as part of a community appreciation day. The day-long event featured free BBQ, raffles for FaceLube?s best skin care for men and face cream products, Meineke oil changes, O?Reilly car care packages, and cheer routines by the Bay Point All-Stars Cheerleaders.

Founded by Jamie and Maryann Plotnick, the Bay Point All-Stars Cheerleading Team is comprised of girls age 5-18. The only qualifications are good grades and good communication skills. No girl is turned away due to body shape, or income. There are currently 75 girls from an equal ethnic mix of white, African American and Spanish descent, and are divided into five teams which compete at different cheer levels. In 2009, the All-Stars took 2nd place at the Nationals in Las Vegas, but missed the last two years due to the lack of funds.

The girls are from a variety of backgrounds. Many are from low-income and single parent families, as well as families who lost their homes and are living in garages. One is the daughter of a single mother who is an Army veteran injured over a year ago while deplored overseas and has yet to receive benefits. Some of the girls are from loving and modest families, whose parents encourage them to look out for their less fortunate team mates and help support each other.

Many other girls have a story to tell and the tales aren?t pretty. The squad is a way for them to escape the hardships of home. One girl?s father is a drug addict and she?s determined not to follow his example. She relies on the team for stability and moral support. Several are in foster care. One was beaten and raped in school.

?She was withdrawn and anti-social when she first joined,? said Coach Jamie Plotnick. ?Now, she?s a vibrant young woman with a dazzling smile. I can?t take away her pain, but I can help her regain her trust in people and give her something to look forward to in life.?

The All-Stars are supported by local grants and donations, but have seen them diminish as a result of the housing crisis and budget cuts. The Plotnick’s daughter, Tessie, a high school sophomore and team captain, maintains the team?s website so that money could go toward the squad. The girls aren?t relying on hand-outs and grants this year. While many of the older girls already work to supplement their family?s income and still keep up their grades, they are determined to raise their own funds toward the cost of attending the Nationals in early 2012, by selling funnel cakes and car washes on weekends at facilities donated by local businesses like Meineke Car Care Antioch.

?This community has seen its share of hardship from the housing crisis, but the All-Stars are our daughters and we have to take care of our own. The team might be lacking in funds, but when they?re out there competing, they carry with them the pride of the whole community,? says T.J. Maran, Manager of Meineke Car Care Antioch.

The community supports the team?s aspirations and gives what it can, but the cost of competition is high. The team needs sponsors for uniforms and transportation. Even tickets that enable them to compete can cost up to $ 250 per girl. On the All-Stars? wish list are a used van and an enclosed trailer to transport equipment.

Rosenthal was mentored by legendary saxophonist Steve Lacy while studying at the New England Conservatory of Music, and is the son of acclaimed bluegrass singer/songwriter and string player Phil Rosenthal. He is an artist with a unique, engaging vision and is the latest rising jazz star to emerge from the storied ranks of Boston?s Either/Orchestra.

“Lines’” open-minded, deeply musical approach brings to mind a range of sounds, from Ornette Coleman?s revolutionary 1959 quartet to expansive post/bop moods by Lacy. Rosenthal?s quartet?singing-toned, lyrical alto saxophonist Rick Stone, supple bassist Kendall Eddy, and texturally acute drummer Austin McMahon are the members?explores inspired material that maintains a deft balance between freedom and structure.

?I?m definitely influenced by Ornette?s writing and his quartet,? says Rosenthal, whose pleasingly burnished tone has both warmth and punch. ?But I also like to write tunes with chords for this configuration. Without a pianist or guitarist laying down the harmony, you have more freedom even if you?re staying within the harmonies.?

Rosenthal composed and arranged most of the pieces on “Lines,” which he also produced. He clearly shares Coleman?s gift for flowing melodic invention. For example, there?s ?Subo,? a slippery calypso that feels like a joyous missive from a Coleman Caribbean holiday. And the aptly chosen title track reveals Rosenthal?s love of long, unexpectedly twisting melodies
